Parable of the watchful servant - Study By Dr. Roby Rajan
The Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the right times? Blessed is that servant whom his lord will find doing so when he comes. Truly I tell you, that he will set him over all that he has. But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken, then the lord of that servant will come in a day when he isn't expecting him, and in an hour that he doesn't know, and will cut him apart, and place his portion with the unfaithful. That servant, who knew his lord's will, and didn't prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whoever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom they deposit much, of him will they ask more. (Luke 12:42-48)
This parable speaks about 4 different kinds of servants and the outcome of their works:
DOES NOT KNOW: v 48
This category of servants who have no idea about the Masters will and end up doing something wrong receive the punishment they deserved in accordance to the deeds or misdeeds they have committed
DOES NOT DO : v 47
This is a category which many times we are guilty of joining. Inspite of a clear directive from God and a prominent leading of the Holy Spirit , we sometimes weigh our options and lean onto our understanding .We tend to delay the immediate obedience that is required of us because our opinions and ideas tend to overpower our will . It is a temporary state of MY will rather than HIS will . Putting off obedience in humility and denying Him to take control can lead to unpleasant consequences as this parable points out that the punishment was severe
DOES NOT CARE: v 45, 46
This category of servants were the ones who deliberately chose to ignore the masters will . He considered the delay in the masters return and chose to dwell on his desires and will and adopted an attitude of willful rejection . The punishment was very severe for these servants; they were punished and expelled away .
DO INDEED DO: v 42-44
These are the servants / disciples who God wants us to be or mature into . Unconditional obedience and undivided attention is what Christ lovingly looks forward to receiving from us . The very purpose of creation was to have a fellowship with Him . Many a times we are more careful not to hurt the fellowships we have on earth and nurture it preciously .How much longing does a wife have for her husband who is returning from work .Though she does not know the exact time she prepares and waits with eagerness for him and tries her best to keep him happy . How much more our Heavenly Father desires that we value His fellowship . The reward for the faithful servant is immense where he is promoted to be in charge of the masters possessions .
Let us take heed and be quick to listen and obey His will in our lives and be partakers of the glorious inheritance He has reserved for us . Let us be prepared in and out of seasons to receive a rich welcome in to His kingdom . He has enriched us and given us all the spiritual gifts we need to convert this desire into our life style (1 Corinthians 1:4-9 )
Parable Of The Unfruitful Fig Tree - Study By Dr. Roby Rajan
He spoke this parable. "A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none. He said to the vine dresser, 'Behold, these three years I came seeking fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down. Why does it waste the soil?' He answered, 'Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it, and fertilize it. If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.'" (Luke Chapter 13:6-8)
This parable illustrates the desire of our heavenly father to see His children flourishing and bearing fruit worthy of bringing glory to His name .He is not pleased with the mediocrity or lukewarmness we exhibit in our lives as Christians on this earth .
One way of looking at the parable is that a fig tree is planted in a vineyard which leads to a question as to why . Fig trees are known to be nutrient and water dependent and to find a fruitless tree after all the investment is certainly a big loss.
Sometimes we often complain of situations or circumstances not being conducive or come up with excuses for being slack . Being planted in a vineyard doesn't make the master expect grapes from a fig tree. He has enriched us and given us all the spiritual gifts we needed when we accepted the testimony of Christ into our lives. (1 Corinthians 1:4-9)
Our job is to dig our roots deeper and drink from the word and bear figs not the grapes our brothers may be bearing.
This parable also illustrated the measure of patience our vine dresser/ caretaker has with us. Jesus Christ our savior is ever interceding for us and working on us in spite of our inadequacies and unfruitfulness. He is digging for us and fertilizing us to bear better fruits in the coming season .He is always pleading for that one more season, one more chance , one more opportunity . It is only because HE loves us so much . It is easy to cut down the fig tree and plant another vine in that patch of land which would by default produce good fruit but His ways and thoughts are much higher than ours . He is always at work wanting to fashion us in to that vessel which he foresaw in us , into that fruit bearing tree which reflects the vine dressers work to the world . He created us to be a particular fruit bearing tree in that particular place and season . Let us humble ourselves and submit ourselves to Him putting aside all the lame we so often quote for being fruitless .
He who began the good work in you will carry it on unto completion.
